2010 Tour des Trees – Another year, another success!

The 2010 annual Tour des Trees kicked off at Chicago’s Millennium Park on Sunday, July 18th.  Cyclists rode a total of nearly 500 miles over the span of a week before ending the tour back at Chicago’s Morton Arboretum on Saturday, July 24th. As the nation’s largest fundraising event for the Tree Research and Educational Endowment (TREE) Fund, the annual cycling tour has generated over $4.4 million since its first ride in 1992.

Each year, NYSA sponsors a rider to take part of the Tour des Trees. The association would like to congratulate this year’s sponsored rider, Frazer Pehmoeller, on his successful completion of the event. This is the second year Frazer has rode in the Tour des Trees and he says he looks forward to participating in coming years. Thank you, Frazer, for your continuing support of NYSA, the field of arboriculture and Tree Research. You have been a dedicated and true representative of the Association. Congratulations on this tremendous achievement!

Dr. George Hudler to Present at September Educational Seminar (September 26-27)

Each year, our members look forward to hearing from Dr. George Hudler of Cornell University at his annual Summer seminar with NYSA. Dr. Hudler holds a Ph.D. from Colorado State University and has been a member of Cornell’s faculty since 1976. He has chaired Cornell’s Department of Plant Pathology since 2004.

This year, because of Dr. Hudler’s schedule and University commitments, he will instead be contributing to our September educational session, where he will give a 30-minute report on disease pathogens that are most likely to cause tree problems due to wet weather the previous year. Dr. Hudler is planning to resume his regular Summer seminar next year.

Society of Municipal Arborists (SMA) Exchange Program for 2011

Each year the Society of Municipal Arborists (SMA) offers an exchange program for municipal arborists located around the world.  SMA and contributing sponsors will fund airfare and basic expenses for professional exchanges within the next year, which will take place in spring or summer of 2011.  Each participant will spend at least one week visiting and working with another city’s forestry department.  An “exchange” may be “two-way,” meaning that paired participants take turns hosting the other, or “one-way,” where a selected participant only visits a willing host city identified and approved by SMA. http://www.urban-forestry.com/

Invasive Pest Info

Here’s how to help STOP THE SPREAD of insect pests:

  • Leave firewood at home–do not transport it to campgrounds or parks.

  • Use only firewood from local sources. “Local” means from less than 50 miles. Firewood is commonly available at or near most campgrounds. It’s a small price to pay to savethe trees in your favorite campground.
  • .
If you have moved firewood, burn ALL of it before leaving your campsite. Do not carry firewood from one campground to another.
